DEVELOPMENT (Otology Training Program)
CAMBODIA PROGRAM FOR TRAINING EAR SURGEONS LAUNCHED
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia- Ravaged by the Khmer Rough from 1975-1979, Cambodia lost 90% of their physicians and now after 30 years is recovering and rebuilding its infrastructure and capacity to support the countries needs. In a joint project with IMPACT UK, GEO will be providing teaching to the ENT community with special attention to 7 doctors in training. The program is a 3-5 year program with 4 visiting teams a year, monthly journal club, and a temporal bone lab.

HEALTH CARE (Humanitarian Aid)
ETHIOPIA- TRAINING OF CLINICAL OFFICERS AND PREVENTION OF DEAFNESS PROGRAM
EAST AFRICA - GEO Europe office-Barcelona Spain, Dr. Sandoval coordinated global programs in both Ethiopia and Tanzania. The Ethiopian program in conjunction with CBM focused on the treatment and teaching of care for life threatening ear disease. Based in Addis Ababa. the prevention of deafness program under Dr Nega Kiros has been working to build a program of clinical officers in the country which faces a sever shortage of ENT doctors (1 ENT per 9 million people). This program is critical for the country and for those suffering from life threatening ear disease. Without it there is little hope for the 80 plus million Ethiopians.

ZANZIBAR OUTREACH PROGRAM & IMPACK UK
EAST AFRICA- GEO partnered with Zanzibar Outreach Project and IMPACT-UK to provided a training session in Stone Town, Zanzibar, where teaching and surgeries were performed by Drs. Weingarten, Sandoval, Wagner, and Zafero. Professor Duret from Bergamo, Italy, pictureded in the photo taught sessions in public ear health. Zanzibar is the home to one million Muslems. There is a very low rate of chronic ear disease and the majority 95% of the patients treated suffered from conductive hearing loss secondary to perforation.

ENT RESOURCES IN LATIN AMERICA / ORL RECURSOS EN AMERICA LATINA
COUPEVILLE, Washington-GEO is conducting a surgery of Otolaryngology services in Latin America, and would value your assistance in completing this questionnaire. The questionnaire will assess the ENT services available in Latin America, help plan interventions to improve ORL service in the future, help to channel resources such as equipment and supplies in the future, and assist organizers of the next IFOS and PAHO meetings to select appropriate topics and speakers.

SAN SALVADOR, EL Salvador - In Central America, GEO works with doctors in the seguro social system and as well the Hospital Bloom advancing skills and providing much needed surgical services. GEO doctors have also mentored Dr. Wilfredo Ramos, MD, who is doing a one year fellowship in Mexico City in Otology and who will return to El Salvador as a staff physician in the ISSH in San Salvador practicing otologic surgery. Our recent trip in February 2010 included Dr. Eric Wilkinson from the House Ear Clinic and Dr. Joe Ursick House Ear Fellow.

EDUCATION (Temporal Bone Course)
CBM - GEO PARTNER PROGRAM-TRAINING PERUVIAN DOCTORS
LIMA,Peru - The temporal bone lab was established in 2007 and continues to provide ear surgery courses to interested ENT from South America. To date doctors from Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, and El Salvador have attended the course. GEO also has established a training course in Chiclayo, Peru for those doctors from Northern Peru as well.
