In the spirit of GEO, Dr. Charles Weingarten, MD, who is a board member of Global ENT Outreach, has volunteered to set up and provide ENT services the North Shore Community Health Center in Highland Park, Illinois. (see the photo above).
Dr. Weingarten has traveled extensively with GEO and understands the developing world and the challenges in delivering health care, especially in the area of treating ear disease. The maldistribution and absence in some cases of affordable health care in the US and its territories; e.g. American Samoa, has inspired him to use some of the lessons he has learned overseas and bring them home to his community in Illinois.
The Lake County Health Department provides medical care and ancillary support services to people of all ages and backgrounds, with multilingual support for low income families. No one is turned away due to inability to pay. Their mission is supported by “Friends for Health” which assists the efforts of the Lake County Health Department through volunteerism and philanthropy.
Dr. Weingarten, MD, and Roni Weiss, RN, BAN, (pictured above with Dr. Weingarten) coordinator of the North Shore Health Center, work together and have developed an Otolaryngology Program at the NSHC in Highland Park. Referral criteria have been developed and distributed to the other clinics in Lake County. Implicit is the continuing education of medical and ancillary personnel regarding the identification and management of ENT issues.
Through solicited donations the clinic was able to purchase equipment and furnish an ENT examining room. Working with local health care providers discounted or volunteer ancillary services have been arranged to allow completion of care for these patients. Dr. Weingarten will provide ENT surgical services for patients consistent with the Clinic’s philosophy on their ability to pay.
